In an exciting development for Marlborough Tennis Club, a major lighting upgrade was successfully completed in March 2025, enhancing evening play on Courts 6 and 7. The project, which cost just over $100,000, involved the installation of two state-of-the-art light poles, delivering nearly 500 lumens at court level—providing clear, consistent visibility for players after dark.
The lighting project was a collaborative effort, involving Eckford Engineering, Marlborough Civil, and Lumosa, with club president Bill Taylor overseeing the process from start to finish. Impressively, regular tennis play at the club continued uninterrupted throughout the installation period.
Work began on February 26, when the two large poles arrived by truck—despite the rain. Access gates near the car park, installed by Ian Hale, allowed entry for essential equipment including a digger and scissor lift. Trenching for wiring conduits started on March 3, with concrete poured over the following two weeks. After a curing period, the poles were raised into position on Monday, March 31. Testing followed and was completed to satisfaction.
In addition to the lighting, the viewing area beside Court 6 has also been resurfaced, improving the overall experience for spectators.
The new lights on Courts 6 and 7 are fully integrated with the club's booking system, joining Courts 1 to 5 under the same automated setup. When a member books a court, the lights will now automatically switch on shortly before play begins and turn off at the end of the session. The cost is $5 per half hour, payable by card at the time of booking.
Light availability is set by the club and adjusts with the seasons. Currently, members can book illuminated play from 7:00pm to 10:30pm.
The Club Committee has extended heartfelt thanks to all members who contributed financially to the project. Contributions are still welcome as the final stages of the project are wrapped up.
