Club History
Dunholme Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1929. The first President was Mr. W.R. Smee, who lived at 27 Ridings Road.
Mr Richard Pearse originally owned the gully where the club is situated. When he moved to the area and built a house at 31 Ridings Rd, Mr Pearse laid a court in front for the use of his family (the house is now the home of current club members). The tennis court was such a great favourite with neighbours that Mr Pearse built another three courts on his land, followed by a pavilion and thus the club was born.
The club started with an equal number of male and female members, who enjoyed playing tennis mainly on weekends. There were no junior players, but some teenagers participated. Members were involved in interclub tournaments by the mid 1930's and particularly relished regular get-togethers for dances, plays and socials at members' properties, local halls and at the clubrooms.
The club became an incorporated body on January 19, 1951. Then in 1957 the members of the club started two years of fundraising to purchase the courts and clubhouse from Richard Pearse for a cost of about £2,500.
Asphalt gave way to synthetic courts in 1986 and the Astrograss was replaced in 2001. The current clubhouse which was erected around 1963, was refurbished in 2000 including the installation of a new kitchen and two bathrooms. The deck was also rebuilt and the wire netting 'balustrading' replaced with smart clear glass panels around the viewing deck.
The completion of a new walkway in 2007, allowed the services to be put underground.
In 2009, our own driveway was re-established at 43 Ridings Rd for the use of senior players.
In 2017, the club installed LED lights on all three courts which were concurrently resurfaced.
The club now has approximately 150 senior and intermediate players and 200 junior players and celebrated its 75th anniversary in November 2004.
