Newsletter November 2024

NOVEMBER 2024

Hello members

I bet you were not expecting that!  The midweek team hosted Tai Tapu on Halloween and it was a spooky yet delicious encounter.

One morning this week, our team gathered on the lawn courts, and it was hard not to say, "How lucky are we?"   The courts on Rows 4 and 5 are in fantastic condition, a testament to the dedication and hard work of our groundskeeper and volunteers.

Planning for our 50th Anniversary Lawn Tournament (January 2025) is nearly complete.  Please let any of the committee know if you can help out in any way, either before or during the event. Even if you are playing, you will have time in-between to lend a hand.  This is the highlight social event of the summer and we want you to be part of it. Further on in this email we have a list of our tournament sponsors, please have a read and support their businesses.

Our Club is experiencing new parking challenges, and this is touched on further down this newsletter, please give it a read.

We warmly welcome new members:

Senior Members:
Haenon, Jude Laing, Chi Rouse-Armadi, Thomas Quayle
and welcome back from sabbatical Guiseppe Loporcaro

     🚗          Parking            🚗

It has been noted that parking in the car park opposite the club continues to be a significant challenge, particularly for members trying to access the club before 3pm on weekdays.

As part of their long term plan, the Christchurch City Council have enacted a new pay to park regime in four of the carparks in Hagley Park.

Fees are $2 for the first hour and then $1.30 for each additional hour, up to a maximum of $4.60 for three hours - seven days a week, from 8am to 5pm.

To help ease access issues to the club, the committee have agreed to retain parking inside the club grounds:

  • between 8am and 3:30pm on weekdays for senior members attending the club to play tennis (no other reasons).
  • The gates by the volleyboard (hitting wall) will be controlled by coaches and will be unlocked during these times. We believe we can safely accomodate up to 8 vehicles in the area to the North of the clubhouse.
  • This parking area should be used as a last resort - we ask all members to look for spots in the main car park before taking up one of these spots.
  • We note that after 3:30pm, the club hosts large numbers of junior players. Cars should be moved out of the temporary parking before 3:30pm. In the event, where this is not possible, then the car will need to remain parked through to 6pm.

Parents of junior players:

We note the potential for similar parking difficulties at pick-up and drop-off time.

However due to the number of young members onsite, we regret that parking in the grounds is not available for pick-up or drop-off.

As a potential solution where parking is not available, please pull in to the right hand side of the access road and ensure that there is space for traffic to pass.If needed, please be prepared to circulate around the car-park.

Canterbury Junior Interclub grades have completed two rounds, and the majority of our 18 junior teams (2 more than last season 😊) are competing well. Most players are getting competitive matches and the majority of our teams are in the top half of the scoreboard. Our coaches are particularly happy to see a great number of TKHP juniors enjoying themselves during team practices and steadily improving their skills.

A massive thank you from Hugo and Kerryn to all the parents who have accepted managing duties for their child’s team. It is a huge help to us and to all parents and players involved in interclub. Credit to all of you that we have fielded full teams for all our teams’ matches so far and we’ll try and keep that going! We also thank all parents for their patience with us as we find our feet with the junior administration role. We hope to steadily improve though the season and into the next!

We hope that a large number of our players will seek extra matchplay and have a go at some regional tournaments over the coming months. For primary school players, the Canterbury Primary School champs is on at Show Weekend and the ENTRIES CLOSE TONIGHT (THURSDAY) 11:59PM. In the Xmas holidays there is the Canterbury Xmas tourney and a new Tier 2 Canterbury tourney 21-24 Jan.
To enter these tournaments, go to https://tnz.tournamentsoftware.com/ click “tournaments” then enter “Canterbury" and you’ll find these events.
Even more importantly for our club members I hope … .TKHP will host it’s annual junior and open grade Grass Court Tournament with singles and doubles from January 13-15 and online entry will be possible on the tournament software from December 1.

Our Summer Hot Shots coaching is underway and our TKHP coaches have loved coaching our young groups. There are so many enthusiastic and skilful kids taking part -  we hope to nurture this talent and grow everyone’s love of the game.
Parents, please put into your calendars that there will be a HOT SHOTS TOURNAMENT for all levels (Red, Orange and Green) that the kids can enter at the end of this coaching term on MONDAY 16th DEC.
Ads will be posted at the end of November on Facebook and emails sent to all parents of Hot Shots.
