DECEMBER 2022

Hi TKHP tennis players

Did someone say "Christmas"?  Yes, Christmas is fast approaching.

There is still plenty of time to make the most of these summer nights - so enjoy your time down at the club, and do use the lawn courts if you can.  There is a beginner's guide below.

The Committee are pleased to confirm that lighting on Row 1 is underway, and installation will take place in early 2023.

All of us on the Committee wish our members a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday period.

A beginner's guide to Lawn Courts/Nets:

If you see the nets on the lawn courts looking a little sad and droopy, this does not mean that the courts are unplayable.   It is common practice to release the tension from the nets when leaving, letting them relax until needed again.   To re-tighten, simply turn the lever and affix the lock to your desired position.

It is usual for the lines to be not as bright as the hard surface courts.  Regular mowing softens the lines, so re-painting does occur when conditions are right.

Grass courts favour the player with a hard service and return. Serve-and-volley players, ones who serve the ball then attack the net, have found great success at Wimbledon. Pete Sampras won half his 14 majors there, and Federer also won seven. Typically, players who can play on hard courts perform just as admirably on grass courts.

Grass is known for having a fast playing surface, with the ball not losing much steam off the bounce, so the ability to blow it past a player is greater than on clay or the hard court. Scoring points are often times faster as volleys are more infrequent. Because the grass gets worn and oftentimes the playing surfaces aren’t exactly even, being more aggressive and coming to the net to hit the ball out of the air instead of off the bounce is sometimes important. The bounce of the ball is also lower too.

A bonus of lawn, is that there is not as much wear and tear on your joints - making for pretty happy tennis players.

Another opportunity awaits for volunteers in January.
On Monday the 16th at 10am we require many helpful hands for an hour of cleaning.  The Club is hosting the Lawn Tennis Seniors Tournament the following weekend, and we would like to present a tidy Club House.
