Coach Development

Tennis Northern is proud to support tennis coaches and assistant coaches throughout the Tennis Northern region by offering a wide range of coach development opportunities. 


Tennis NZ Coaching Assistant Course

This course is designed for people who intend to assist a head coach delivering to beginner players or for volunteers delivering tennis in rural/remote areas. The course covers teaching basic technique and applying key aspects of coaching to practical situations. The course enables coaches to deliver lessons to beginner players at Hot Shots Blue, Red, Orange and Green stages.

Coaches will gain an understanding of the characteristics of players at different stages of physical and mental development whilst connecting the technical and tactical components of tennis at these stages.

Duration: This course is delivered as two 2-hour webinars followed by two in-person practical days.

Tennis Northern Assistant Coach Workshop

This workshop is designed and delivered by Tennis Northern and is a benefit to coaches and assistants in the Tennis Northern region. Specifically for assistant coaches looking to continue their professional development after completing the Tennis NZ Coaching Assistant Course. This one-day workshop explores the Hot Shots Meaningful Experiences Framework, bringing this to life on court to create fun and engaging learning environments. Assistant coaches will also develop their coaching skills using a contemporary coaching style. Hot Shots competitions and festivals in their clubs.

Tennis NZ Development Coach Qualification

During this course participants learn to develop the skills of beginner tennis players of all ages. There is a major focus on planning, delivering and reflecting on coaching sessions and creating positive learning environments. The course covers technical and tactical tennis fundamentals, Tennis Hot Shots, Cardio Tennis, Tennis Xpress, the legal and ethical responsibilities of a coach, risk management, programme planning, tennis rules, personal development and using technology. 

The Development Coach course is a Tennis Australia qualification. Tennis Australia’s courses are the only tennis coaching courses officially recognised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). 

Duration: This course is delivered as 14 in-person days over a six-month period.

In addition to professional development Tennis Manager, Gayle Vaughan is also offers support to club coaches across the region. This support could include:

  • Collaboration with coaches across the region
  • On-court coaching observations
  • Assistant coach support
  • Development of coaching programmes in clubs
  • Professional standards for Club coaches, e.g. listing on the Tennis NZ Professional Coaches Register
  • Coach:Club relationships
  • Connection with Auckland's Sport and Recreation sector - Harbour Sport, Aktive, Tennis Auckland, funding organisation
