The traditional three Wanaka tournaments were held between 2 and 12 January. The excellent tennis was matched by perfect tennis weather and players as well as spectators had a great time.
The Stonewood Homes Wanaka Open saw a total of 54 players compete in men's and women's singles as well as doubles. Exciting matches over 3 days produced the following winners: Charlotte Byers in the women's singles and Erin O'Neill and Scarlett Rutherford Prince in the doubles. In the men's singles Lucas Evans emerged victorious and the doubles was won by Dan and Noa Milburn.
From 5 to 8 January, 80 junior players competed in the Craigs Investment Partners Wanaka Junior Open in different age categories, under 18, under 14, under 12 and under 10. It was great to see the kids' enthusiasm and the fun that they had, we will surely see a few of them do very well in future tournaments. The winners of the 21 different events can be found under this link
After a couple of rest days, the oldies took over on 11 and 12 January with the Quartz Reef 35+ Open Doubles tournament with 93 players competing. Despite the more advanced years, there was no shortage in motivation and enthusiasm, and some great matches were played, where craftiness occasionally made up for reduced athletic abilities. Bottles of wine from our sponsor were awarded as prizes to the winners in the categories A grade, B grade and 120+, both in doubles and mixed. Winners are listed under this link.
The success of the tournaments would have been impossible without the tireless work of our President Jeanette Hatten and her team of volunteers who ensured a smooth tournament and the sustenance of players with yummy food and many a cold beverage, a great thank you to you all!
