The club held its 2024 Junior Club Championships on a single day, Saturday 27 April, due to a very low number of entries. Megan Healy, Tournament Director, received entries from only 9 players so reduced the events to one 14U singles event and a Silver Doubles event, which resulted in her scheduling 6 singles and 3 doubles matches in total.
Again this year, only one girl, Minhan Dai from the Karori Lawn club, entered the Championships and played in both events. She gave a good account of herself in many long rallies with the boys she played against.
The format used was best of three sets with the third set a tiebreaker set. However, no match extended to a third set, each being decided in two sets. The 14U singles event was held with elimination and consolation draws but, as there were three entries only for the doubles event, it was played as a round robin.
Wilder Campbell was by far the strongest singles player and won both his matches very comfortably, losing only four games. Xavier Gardner was eliminated from the main draw by Wilder in the first round but then easily won both his consolation draw matches, also losing only 4 games.
The low number of entries may have been due to the scheduling of the championships late in April, plus the point that those juniors who were now playing in senior interclub teams were not encouraged to enter, so leaving the Junior Championships events for younger juniors to contest. Most of the older juniors had played in the Open Championship events and distinguished themselves in those.
The results of the various events (main and consolation draws) are as follows:
Singles 14U
Winner: Wilder Campbell
Runner-up: Will Huntington
Singles 14U Consolation
Winner: Xavier Gardner
Runner-up: Minhan Dai
Doubles Silver
Winners: Will Huntington & Cameron Leikis
Runners-up: Haoyuan Gu & Hugo Smith
