The 2023 Open Championships attracted entries by 29 players for the five events (men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles) and it is pleasing to record the entry of seven of our juniors, in preparation for the club's Junior Championships the following weekend. Unfortunately, the number of entries from our woman members were greatly exceeded by the entries from the men and boys.
The matches were played predominantly over the weekend of 24, 25 and 26 March, with six matches being played on the Friday evening to progress the early matches. However, the weather over the weekend remained fine and only one match (mixed doubles consolation) was scheduled to be played later at the convenience of the participants. As at 5 April, that match remains to be played.
Club Captain. Rosstan Mazey, again used Tournament Planner (TP) to run all the events, with entries being made largely on-line. TP's programme makes the event draws with selected seedings once provided with current Match Hub rankings. TP also schedules matches over the three courts, given an estimate of average match duration.
The format retained for all matches was best of three sets, the first two being conventional advantage sets with tiebreakers and the third set a super tiebreaker. A sudden death point was played on the second deuce to move games along.
As in previous years, the Open Championships over the five events saw high standard tennis and, as in the past, many matches were decided by the super tiebreaker set.
It is worth noting that the men's singles semi-finals were contested by four members of the club's Men's Premier 3 interclub team, with Nathan Storey defeating Simon Ross and Ethan Pryor defeating Rosstan Mazey. Nathan, who was last year's men's singles Champion, retained his title by defeating Ethan Pryor in the final.
In the women's events, Tricia Wills, last year's women's singles Champion , unfortunately injured her calf muscle in a women's doubles match and had to withdraw from all her remaining matches, including the mixed doubles matches. This led to Sharyn Westlake becoming the women's singles Champion by a walkover and also opened the way for Glenda van Drimmelen and Kevin Wilson to regain the mixed doubles Championship.
