The Newlands-Paparangi Tennis Club started on 21 November 1931 in Newlands School and was limited to 35 members.
A midweek section was started in 1958. Wind was recorded as a problem! The first interclub teams were entered in the Northern Association in 1973.
The Club outgrew the school tennis courts and arranged with the Wellington City Council to build 3 courts in Black Rock Road. They were completed in 1968 and the pavilion was built entirely by voluntary labour and completed in October 1969.
A Plexipave surface was added to the courts in 1982 and they were recoated in 1997. Court lighting was installed in 1992. In 2003, the Club was approached by the Northern United Junior Hockey Club who wanted to add an Astroturf surface and use the courts for practice in the winter. This work was completed in 2004. The facilities were then shared between tennis and hockey until the hockey club left in 2020. At this point the club came close to closing due to the need to further invest in upgrading the court surface and lights, as well as a dwindling membership.
A new era
With a decision to keep the club open and significant volunteer ambition to rejuventate the club, funds were raised to replace the court surface in 2023. Due to a diverse range of offerings and a strategy to be a highly inclusive and welcoming club for all ages and abilities, membership grew signifanctly - the fastest growing club in NZ at the time.
In 2024 and 2025 the Club was awarded "Club of the Year" by it's affiliate body Tennis Central and was a finalist for Tennis NZ's Club of the Year. It was also awarded the "Love Tennis" Club of the year by Tennis NZ, recognising the impact of the Club's opening season Love Tennis event in 2024. It has also been a finalist in the Wellington Regional Sports Awards for 2024 and 2025.
With funds raised for replacement lights, these were installed in October 2025, continuning the significant development of the Newlands-Paparangi Tennis Club.
