THE TENNIS NEW ZEALAND COACH REGISTER

The management of safe practice in New Zealand will centre around the Coach. What is the Coach Register?

Launched in 2023, the Coach Register is a list of coaches working in New Zealand that verifies their qualifications and professional standards. It is the foundation for Tennis New Zealand’s Find a Coach tool, promoting coaches who meet current international qualification, safeguarding, legal and ethical standards, and professionalism. The Coach Register ensures that those operating as coaches in our sport meet required standards and are endorsed by both Tennis New Zealand and the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Requirements to be on the Coach Register?

  • Complete a Tennis NZ Coach Education Course recognised by the ITF (Coaching Assistant and above).
  • Successfully complete all competency-based assessment tasks associated with the course.
  • Alternatively, if you hold a historical or international qualification not recognised by the ITF, you can complete a current Tennis New Zealand course or, complete the Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) process through Tennis New Zealand.

COMPLETING THE SIX CHECKS √

  • Safeguarding Training The Safeguarding check is ticked once a coach has completed any course with Tennis New Zealand - Coaching Assistant or above, or a similar course with an international body recognised by the ITF. Safeguarding modules are included in all relevant courses.

  • First Aid Coaches must complete a relevant and up to date First Aid course. To maintain a First Aid qualification they would then complete a First Aid Refresher every three years. For information on upcoming courses, please contact mel@tenniscentral.co.nz.

  • Insurance Tennis Central recommends all coaches who work as contractors have Liability Insurance. Common perception is that sports coaches cannot be sued in New Zealand. However, they can be held liable for significant compensation and legal costs. Coaches are encouraged to review advice on insurance from Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Enquire with your insurance agency for more information.

  • Member Protection Declaration Coaches must annually complete the Member Protection Member Declaration. Download the form here and return to Tennis Central (mel@tenniscentral.co.nz)

Coaches can update their information through Tennis New Zealand’s profile update page on The Portal. This includes uploading qualifications, first aid certificates and agreeing to the Code of Ethics.
