The club held its 2023 Junior Club Championships over the weekend of 1 and 2 April. Mark Storey, Tournament Director, received 25 entries from 21 players, which resulted in his scheduling 28 singles and doubles matches in total.
As rain was forecast for Saturday, some matches were scheduled on Friday night. However, the promised rain held off until the late afternoon of Saturday, by which time most matches had been completed. The rain interrupted two finals matches, which were completed on Sunday morning.
Regrettably, only one girl, Elsa Pryor, entered events this year and there were no mixed doubles events. However, Elsa held her own against the boys, won the singles 10U and was runner-up in the singles 12U event.
The format used was best of three sets (short sets for 10U and 12U) with the third set a tiebreaker set. This made for more interest during matches and several were decided by the third set.
The quality of the semi-finals and finals was particularly high in the Gold Doubles matches. Robbie Fear and Gethyn Healy survived their semifinal against Ollie Hercus and William Reiterer by winning the super tiebreaker set but were defeated in another super tiebreaker in the final by Wilder Campbell and Ethan Pryor. The final match in particular was a worthy one with many "impossible gets" winning points by all four players.
We are fortunate to have so many good junior members coming through with several now playing in senior interclub teams to gain experience and improve their tennis standard.
