Celebrating a Pāpāmoa Legend: Athole Herbert Turns 90!

They say that tennis is one of the healthiest activities you can participate in, contributing directly to a longer, more active life. Right here in Pāpāmoa, we have living proof of that theory in long-time club member, Athole Herbert.

On Tuesday, Athole graciously shared his milestone 90th birthday with our regular mid-week seniors session. In a true mark of respect, there was a fantastic turnout on court to share the morning's matches, and an even greater number of admirers in attendance for the after-match birthday festivities in the clubrooms. Athole was in fine form on the court on a beautiful winter morning, and later spoke with absolute aplomb during the presentations.

Much thanks must be attributed to Linda McGovern, who played a key role in organizing the day and baking a superb birthday cake. Linda also presented a lovely poem written for Athole that perfectly captured his on-court persona. Athole thanked the club members and attendees with his usual sense of sharp comic timing, while also sharing proud updates on his beautiful family and their various successes.

Club President Gerald Greig officially thanked Athole for everything he has achieved at the club across many varied roles over the years, noting that he remains an absolute inspiration to all generations of club members. Finally, Rob Nauman spoke on behalf of Tennis Western BOP, thanking Athole for his extensive efforts on behalf of tennis across the wider region.

All in all, the morning was a spectacular celebration of a fine gentleman. The entire club is in complete awe of Athole remaining in such fine fettle. Happy 90th Birthday, Athole!
