Cleaner Needed -

As our club membership continues to grow, the clubrooms are now utilised on a daily basis. It is important to us that the clubrooms are maintained in a presentable and hygienic state. Unfortunately, the cleaning workload has become too much for our small group of volunteers to handle. Therefore, we are seeking an individual or small team to commit to the cleaning tasks in the clubrooms. The ideal cleaning schedule would be on Tuesdays and Fridays. The tasks would include vacuuming, mopping the hard floors, and cleaning and servicing the bathrooms. Ideally, we would love someone who is willing to volunteer and carry out the work to a high standard. However, if that's not possible, we are willing to pay for cleaning services.

The Papamoa Tennis Senior Club Champs are fast approaching

This is the part of our season where the tennis is a little less casual than usual and we battle away to find who are the overall champions across the various categories. Whilst the tennis is, of course,  competitive we are still focussed on participation - we want as many entries as possible. Even if you have no expectations of glory please get in the swing of positivity by entering.

This year we are modernising the entry process online by clicking on the links below. Of course you can still enter the old fashioned way by just talking to Daren O'Meara on 022 6066 123.

Mixed Doubles - Saturday March 25 (reserve day Sunday March 26 in case of bad weather) - enter here Mixed Doubles Club Champs   .       Of course if you do not yet have a partner to play with, do not just pass on the idea... Contact Daren O'Meara and he will try to find you a suitable partner.

Ladies and Men's Doubles - Saturday April 1st - (reserve day Sunday April 2) -  enter here Doubles Club Champs  .         As with the mixed doubles if you want to play and don't yet have a partner contact Daren - We Want people Playing!!

Singles - April 15 (reserve day April 16) - enter here Singles Club Champs

On each of the three days you can expect to play three matches. Keep winning and you will find yourself in the Open final - lose in the first round you will go into the plate, lose in the second round and you will go into the super plate / bowl round. At the conclusion of each day we expect to find our finalists for each division.

On April Saturday April 29th we will hold a Grand Finals Day. On this day all the best players in each division will play their finals matches. Naturally we hope to attract a packed gallery of senior players who did not make it through, together with friends, family etc to support the finalists in their quest for Club glory.

Shave 4 a Cure Fundraiser.

Recently we received the following email from Linda and Mike McGovern:

Subject: Help me support Shave for a Cure

Hi there,

I’ve decided to do this crazy thing for an amazing cause. My 4 year old grandson was diagnosed with leukaemia and is in Starship Hospital. I want to help find effective treatments to shave lives and make sure people with cancer get the support they need to get through.

So I need your help!

Please sponsor me for this great cause. It's simple, fast and totally secure. Just click this link: https://www.shaveforacure.co.nz/tatesmates  whip out your credit card, and Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand will email you a tax deductible receipt for your generosity.

Thanks for all your support!

Mike McGovern

Without any hesitation we would absolutely love to support the McGovern family in raising funds for cancer research. We all know how much joy and excitement tennis brings to our lives. However, there are many people in our community who are struggling with cancer and are not able to enjoy life to the fullest. That's why our tennis club has decided to organize a "shave for a cure" fundraiser, to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

Saturday May 27 - We will hold a fundraiser at the club. Details are being worked through so as to provide a day of entertainment - exhibition tennis, music etc -  and to maximise the funds raised.

We're asking for your support to make this event a success. It's a simple yet powerful way to show our solidarity and support for the McGovern family and all those who are battling cancer. By participating in the fundraiser, you'll not only help raise money for cancer research but also encourage others to get involved.

We understand that shaving your head may not be an easy decision for everyone, but we urge you to consider the impact your participation can have. You'll be sending a powerful message of hope and support to cancer patients and their families, and inspiring others to join the fight against cancer.

So, whether you decide to shave your head, donate, or simply spread the word about the fundraiser, we appreciate your support. Let's come together as a tennis community to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Thank you for your consideration.

Further details will follow nearer to the time.

"Hump Day Doubles League"- each Wednesday May 10 - June 28 @ 6.30pm start

Following the success of last year's edition we are again running this new concept for Wednesday evenings. Our members' requested something a little more competitive for a club session, but still with a social element and the flexibility to make allowance if you can't make it for that night.

What is it:  Find a doubles partner and "pair up" for the duration of the 7 week league (also enter as a single needing a partner). No compulsion to be there every week but the objective is to accumulate as many points as you can toward league end. Rewarding attendance and match success at the same time!

When is it?  The league will run each Wednesday from May 10 through June 28 from 6.30pm till approxi 8.00pm. Warm up hit ups from 6- 6.30. Peter Blow will be doing the draw and facilitating the games.

How will it work: You will play 3 short format matches per evening. For each match you win you will be awarded "points" toward your season tally. Peter will grade the matches according to playing levels. (Depending on entry numbers and playing level disparities, he may run the comp in 2 divisions with a promotion / relegation feature).

Can non members play in it? This doubles league is available to all tennis players - Papamoa tennis membership not essential.

How much does it cost? This league is a free option for Papamoa Tennis Club members, whereas all visitors / casuals will need to pay $10 per player per night.

LED Lights Project

We are delighted to announce that the fundraising required to get the lights replaced on all 16 courts has now been completed. An order for the new lights and poles with local company Energy Services. The equipment has a lead time of around 16 weeks to be available for installation so we would expect to see the majority of "visible" work around July / August. A more detailed work schedule will be established with the company over the next few weeks. Of course we will minimise disruption to court availability where at all possible.

This project has taken just over two years of detailed fund raising to get to this point and when it is completed will see the facility with much improved lighting.

Business House Feb / Mar

The February / March edition of our Business House competition has been very successful. We have 16 teams battling it out each week which sees all the courts occupied. A feature of the Nov/Dec edition and now this Feb/Mar version has been the delicious food on offer for after match supper. We are very, very grateful to Leisa, Charlotte and Heidi who have toiled away every week, presenting magnificent meals that would not be out of place in a professional restaurant.

Out on the courts the action is heating up in a race for glory on the last night of competition - March 30. With 2 weeks to go both divisions are wide open.

In the socially serious division we have Last Year's Champs and Wild Cards leading the way, but with Davies fencing and the Ace Holes hot on their heels.

In the seriously social division we have Redefined Whanau leading with Sets on The Beach close behind.

How to reuse, repurpose used tennis balls:

We are looking for innovative and interesting ways to give our used tennis balls a chance for a "second life". Previously we have donated them to animal shelters and doggy day cares etc, however we are now generating more than we can successfully donate.

Here's a challenge for the creative thinkers among our membership! You can help us be more eco friendly!!

We have prizes for the best suggestions to help reuse the excess balls.

Email us with your ideas and the best three ideas will be rewarded with a club branded headwear - cap or bucket hat.
