Newsletter - May 2025

We held a committee meeting on Monday 5 May and, as usual, have quite a few things to update members on.

Coaching

As we teased in the last newsletter - and as many of you will now have seen through our Facebook page - we are very excited to announce that we have appointed Andy Wheeler as the new head coach at Miramar. He comes with an enormous amount of experience coaching in New Zealand, including coaching some of New Zealand’s top players and being awarded the NZ coach of the year accolade.

Andy is a Miramar local with a strong commitment to building the club as well as the connections between the club, local schools and colleges.

With Baptiste working alongside him, there are lots of new coaching opportunities available - both classes and private/group sessions - for both juniors and seniors. These include more options for Hot Shots, squads for juniors looking to improve their skills and Active tennis for adults.

We strongly encourage you to have a look at the coaching page of our website for the details about these and how to sign up: https://clubspark.kiwi/miramartennisclub/Coaching

For bespoke lessons please dont hesitate to get in contact with Andy directly.

You can also find out more about Andy here: https://clubspark.kiwi/miramartennisclub/Coaching/Meetthecoach

Club champs

Club championship matches have been played in good spirits with many matches only decided by tiebreak. We will be playing the last rounds and the finals this weekend (Saturday 10th May with a reserve day on Sunday 11th if required). Keep an eye out on Facebook for updates and plans for the weekend. If the weather plays ball and earlier rounds are complete it would be great to get a good turn out to watch some of the finals on Saturday afternoon.

The draw can be found here: Tennis New Zealand - Miramar Tennis Club - Club Champs 2025 - Draws

Love Tennis

I know it is a little way away yet, but preparation for our Love Tennis open day is already underway. It will take place from 10-2 on Sunday 7 September.  https://tennis.kiwi/clubs/lovetennis-overview/

Grants

We were recently successful in getting a grant for $5,200 for new nets, balls and other essential equipment for the Club. Thanks to the Bobby Foundation (TAB) for this money, and to our grants’ officer, Neil, for submitting our application.

Constitution update - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!

In the last newsletter, we provided a bit of information about the constitution revision that we will be undertaking this year. As we mentioned, we will be working on this throughout this year, with the aim of putting a revised constitution to members at our AGM in August (all revisions have to be approved at a General Meeting).

The next stage is for the committee to agree on a draft version for consultation with members. We will do this in the coming weeks. We will then circulate the draft with members with some additional information on key points to note, and schedule a webinar and in person meeting opportunities for people to ask any questions they may have.

It is really important that members are aware of this process and ideally participate in it. If you would like to be involved in this process, please contact Aidan Burch, Club Secretary at miramartennis@xtra.co.nz

A good starting point for information about these changes is Tennis NZ’s Modernising Tennis Hub https://tennis.kiwi/clubs/plan/

Clubroom Bookings

Just a reminder that the upstairs of the clubhouse is separately bookable by members. So if you need to escape, wind down, play a bit of table tennis, head to the booking page.

Flood lights

Please be aware of our obligations with the court flood lights. If only two courts are in use, please turn off the lights to courts 3 and 4 and just use courts 1 and 2. Flood lights must be turned off by 10pm (no exceptions).

Tournaments

Congratulations to Ronan Avery who represented Miramar at the Champ of Champs held last weekend reaching the Semi Finals.
