Newsletter 21 June 2024

We held our fifth committee meeting of the year last Monday (17 June) and have lots of interesting things to update members on.

AGM date

Our club Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday 17th August in the Miramar clubrooms. We really encourage members to come along to this as it’s an important opportunity for members to engage in how the club is run. We would like to encourage members to come along and we have plans for social tennis and activities to coincide with the formal business we are required to undertake.

We’ll have club day as usual from 1-3pm and then have the AGM after upstairs in the clubrooms. The bar will be open and we’ll get some pizzas in too. The official notice of the AGM will come out shortly.

Coaching update

Ace your School Holidays!

Blake will be running a school holiday programme during the first week of the school holidays. Monday 8th through to Wednesday 10th July.

It will run from 8.45am to 3pm each day and cost $60 a day ($70 for non-members) or $150 for all three days ($180 for non-members).

More information can be found on our website including registration

HotShots/Active/Privates

There is a great group of young junior players who have continued their HotShots through term 2. It's really great to see them all improve and having fun.

Active tennis lessons is still on every Monday. Intermediate 6pm and Beginners at 7pm. I understand the beginner crew like to enjoy a few wines beforehand so if this sounds like you register online here

Love tennis

And just another important date for your diaries - The Love Tennis club open day will be on Sunday 8th September from 10am-2pm. This is a great opportunity to open the club to the wider community and encourage people to come along and give tennis a go. It’s always a fun day with lots of activities, so spread the word. We always need willing helpers too so will be in touch again nearer the time.

Ball Machine & Grants updates

Exciting news -the club now has a brand new ball machine!

The club was successful in its grant funding application for a new ball machine along with three new junior nets for hot shots. We’d like to say a big thank-you to NZCT for funding these!

The ball machine is an exciting addition to the club’s facilities and is already being used by Blake in his coaching lessons. We’re just figuring out exactly how it will made available to members (i.e. access, court usage etc) and will let you know soon. In the meantime if you wish to use it please contact Neil Wong or Blake Smith for a demo.

We are also planning to apply for funding for uniforms for the interclub teams for the upcoming season so that we can all look crisp as we represent the club in competition. We will also apply for funding to go towards balls and new nets.

A big shout out to Neil for all his hard work in administering the funding applications.

In regard to trust funding it is the club’s view that if the money is generated in the community (pokie machines) it’s our job/responsibility to return that money to good use within the community via the tennis club. We will continue to make regular applications to local funding organisations for equipment and club upgrades.

Casual play

After a slight technological hiccup, the casual book a court facility for non-members is up and running again through the court booking page. This enables non-members to book and pay for court hire. They will need to register on our website when they book for the first time. Please spread the word on this. We will also update signage around the club.

Deck update

Work on progressing the deck replacement is well underway. Pauline, a former member of the club and architect is helping prepare the plans and engineering reports to apply for consent. This is an exciting project and is part of the club’s commitment to a rolling plan of improving the major assets of the club (following the lights and the resurfacing over recent years). We’ll keep you posted!

Club Thrive

Club Thrive is an initiative run by Tennis Central that incentivises clubs to put things in place to improve the club and grow membership. If we achieve a certain number of initiatives over the course of the year we can get a reduction in our affiliation fees up to a maximum of $2,000, which is a significant saving for the club! As part of this, one thing we are looking to do in the near future is run a survey of club members so we can get more of a sense of what’s working well, and what we could improve on. Please keep an eye out for this - it’s another important way for members to get involved in how the club is run.

Woof woof

We are a dog friendly club and welcome four legged friends. However please be reminded no dogs are allowed on the playing surface. Dogs must be on a lead and limited to the grass areas.

Tennis Balls

Neil is selling cans of technifibre Xone tennis balls for $19.

Please get in touch with Neil Wong to purchase a few cans (minimum of two). They now cost close to $30 at the Renouf tennis shop, so this is a steal. 0211333081, corneiliuswong@hotmail.com

Shout out for committee members

We are always on the look out for members who can help out in any way with running the club or with odd jobs. Whether that’s a formal role on the committee or you just have a skill that could be useful to the club in any way. As committee members, we are all passionate about making Miramar Tennis Club a great place to visit, play tennis and socialise, but as the saying goes many hands make light work!

Suggestions and proactive ideas are always welcomed. Our next committee meeting will be on Monday 22 July at 7pm
