Committee Meetings
We’ve had two meetings since our last newsletter - apologies for not getting a newsletter out in between! - one on Monday 24 February and one on Monday 31 March. As usual, we have quite a few things to update members on, including an exciting notice coming up about coaching!
Coaching
We are very excited to announce that we will soon have a new head coach at Miramar. And while we can’t reveal all the details quite yet, he comes with an enormous amount of experience coaching in New Zealand, including coaching some of New Zealand’s top players, as well as mentoring many other coaches in the region. What we can say is that he is a Miramar local with a strong commitment to building the club as well as connections between the club, locals schools an colleges.
Baptiste is staying with us for Term 2 and will be working closely with the new head coach. He will be offering the same classes and private lessons as he has been. We have been getting great feedback on Baptiste so please do get in touch with him directly if you want to brush up on your tennis skills baptiste35740@gmail.com or 020 4185 3563
Check out https://clubspark.kiwi/miramartennisclub/Coaching for more details. including registering for Term 2 HotShots lessons
Holiday Programme
We will be running two school holiday progammes during the April school holidays. We will be offering full day ($100) or half day ($60) options. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea all included. And if it rains, we have activities lined up for indoors!
More information can be found here - Clubspark / Miramar Tennis Club / April Holiday Programme
Indoor Club Day
On ANZAC day the club has indoor courts booked from 12-3pm for indoor match play. Mark it in your diary, more information will be shared closer to the time.
Interclub round up
Interclub has pretty much wrapped up now for the 24/25 season, only one or two final catch up matches are yet to be played. It’s been another good season for Miramar, with 10 senior teams and 3 junior teams competing.
Prem 1 Men had a very strong second half of the season winning the post christmas competition (Tennis Central Cup). This was a good reflection on the hard work and training the team had been putting in since starting their season last winter. A big thanks to a number of top level players who represented Miramar this season inparticular Finlay Hall who is currently playing on the international challenger tennis circuit atempting to break into the big leagues!
By winning the post christmas competition the Prem 1 men qualified for the Grand Final that was played in mid March. The lads played extremely well in a very tight tie against a strong and experienced Avalon side, eventually going down 4-2.
Prem 3 Men came second and have earnt promotion into Premier 2 next season. Prem 2 Women came 7th in a strong group.
In the Technifibre league, Men’s 1 came 4th, Men’s 2, 6th and Men’s 5 came 4th, Men’s A won their group, Women’s 1, 7th, Women’s 2, 7th, Women’s A came 2nd and Women’s B finished 3rd.
In the junior leagues, Boy’s A came 4th, Boy’s C came 6th, Girl’s B came 2nd.
Congratulations to all those that have taken part in these competitions over the summer, it’s great to see strong Miramar representation across all the different leagues. And next season all our interclub teams will have Miramar uniforms, so we’ll look good to!
‘1000 Thanks’ - a Tennis Central campaign
Tennis Central has launched a ‘1000 Thanks Campaign’ to collect messages of thanks for the organisations that have contributed to the $2.2 million of upgrades that have been completed at the Wellington Renouf Tennis Centre over the past six years. The idea is that this will be a first step towards seeking future funding to support tennis across the region.
You will see posters at the club with a QR code to scan so that you can leave a message. We’d really appreciate all members that pass through the club to scan and leave a message. Please try and leave a bit more than a simple two-word thank you! A bit of depth to the message will go a long way!
You can also submit messages through the Tennis Central website: https://clubspark.kiwi/renouftenniscentre/SayThanks
Club champs
We will soon be opening entries for this year’s club champs. Entries will then close by 11 April and finals weekend will be 10/11 May. It will be up to individuals to arrange their matches in the early round. We’ll email round the link to enter as soon as we have set it up.
Community Play
Community play only runs in Terms 4 and 1, so we’re coming to the end of our sessions for this term. It’s really been a lot of fun and we’ve had a good mix of familiar and new faces. Our record was 14 kids one lovely sunny afternoon! We’ll be back again in Term 4, but do note that Bpatiste’s classes will be carrying on in Term 2.
Constitution update - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!
In the last newsletter, we provided a bit of information about the constitution revision that we will be undertaking this year. As we mentioned, we will be working on this throughout this year, with the aim of putting a revised constitution to members at our AGM in August. (All revisions have to be approved at a General Meeting).
It is really important that members are aware of this process and, to the extent possible, to participate in it. If you would like to be involved in this process, please contact Aidan Burch, Club Secretary at miramartennis@xtra.co.nz
A good starting point for information about these change is Tennis NZ’s Modernising Tennis Hub https://tennis.kiwi/clubs/plan/
A couple of smaller points:
Just a reminder that the upstairs of the clubhouse is separately bookable by members. So if you need to escape, wind down, play a bit of table tennis, head to the booking page.
Neil is on the lookout for a couple more people to add to his lawnmowing roster. If you have half an hour every once in a while to help out, please get in touch.
We are also on the look out for crockery and cutlery for the kitchen in the clubhouse, so if you think you may have some that you could contribute, please get in touch.
