NLTC Autumn Update – March 2024
Welcome to our latest club update
This is a VERY long newsletter, but please make sure you read to the end to ensure you don’t miss out on opportunities to play tennis this autumn/winter.
The reward for reading right to the end is to find out whether you are the winner of the prezzy card for one lucky member who completed our survey at the end of last year.
Well done to everyone who has represented the club this year in the NBS Senior Interclub and Junior Interclub or in junior or senior NBTA rep fixtures and a huge thank you to our club captain Sholto for coordinating everything with NBTA, all our team captains for making tennis happen each week and to our junior parents who make the commitment to getting their children playing.
No Saturday junior tennis or Sunday social tennis this Easter weekend
The bookings have been cancelled for junior, senior doubles and family play this weekend, so please feel free to make your own bookings to play.
Bennett Cup makes its way back to Nelson
Congratulations to the NLTC who had a convincing win against Marlborough Tennis Club late last month and by doing so, brought the cup back to Nelson.
Thank you to Sholto and Lauren for pulling the strong team together, Lauren for making sure the day ran smoothly and to our volunteers who assisted with the catering and refreshments on the day: Lauren, Robyn, Michelle, Anita, Mark, Shawn, Brook and Steph.
What a team!
Help running the bar for social events
The squash club has offered to train members of the tennis club to operate the bar so that we are able to open it when we have social events.
Please email Brook Freeman by Sunday 31 March if you are interested in spending an hour one Thursday evening learning the ropes.
Hannah Maschler memorial tennis event
In memory of tennis fanatic Hannah Maschler, who passed away at the end of last year, we’ll be hosting a fun tennis event on Sunday 19 May from 10am – noon, followed by food and refreshments.
Donations will be collected for the Nelson Tasman Hospice and the Women’s Refuge.
More details to follow, but please add this date to your diary. We’d love to see you there to remember and celebrate Hannah’s life.
Love Tennis – 8 September 2024
It’s back for another year. NLTC welcomes the whole Nelson community to come and give tennis a go. There will be lots of tennis activities, food, music, prizes and more. Spread the word and put the date in your diary as we love as much member involvement and participation as possible.
Options for play this autumn/winter
With the season drawing to an end, the committee and other volunteers are looking at what organised tennis will be on offer over autumn and winter. As with recent years, we definitely have a wider range of options for players at this time of year. So, take a look below and see what interests you.

Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in taking part in a club ladder. We have had great interest and we’ll look to kick off once interclub and Cameron Cup have come to a conclusion.
We encourage any senior members and juniors who play senior interclub to take part.
A huge thank you to Jonas Asmussen who has offered to administer the ladder and who has repaired our external noticeboard and prepared for all the ladder information to be displayed there.
A separate registration email will follow and will outline the rules and format of the ladder. Those who have already expressed an interest in playing will still need to register. Important: please note that there are 30 spots on the ladder. It will be first in first served.

Wednesday evening men's and women's div 1 doubles
There have been many requests for these sessions to run again this autumn/winter and club captain Sholto Duncan is looking to trial a self-sign up googlesheet on a first come, first served basis each week.
This session is aimed at men and women’s division 1 players and we do invite players from other clubs to participate in this.
The cost will be $7 for members and $10 for non members.
Please contact Sholto if you are keen to learn more and start to add your name to the googlesheet to participate.
Wednesday evening women’s div 2 doubles
Katrina Hollingworth has kindly offered to get this women’s social tennis option up and running for our div 2 and social doubles players.
This will be a casual, low commitment set up, with interested players added to a WhatsApp group who will be asked who is keen to play each week.
For NLTC members only. $5 per session.
Contact Katrina if you’d like to take part.
Thursday evening Fast4 tennis
We have run the Fast4 format of tennis on Thursday evenings for the last couple of years now and it is very popular. Teams of 4 are put together (we make sure each team is evenly matched ability wise to ensure everyone gets a good level of tennis). Read about Fast4 rules here.
We start at 5.45pm and are usually done and dusted by 7.30pm, where we often retreat to a local hostelry for a drink. It’s a very social affair.
For NLTC members only. $7 per session.
We’d love to run this comp again from late April, but are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to manage and oversee these sessions.
If you love this weekly comp, let us know if you can help to coordinate. We’d love to hear from you. Just reply to this email.
To register your interest, add your name and contact details to the second tab in this spreadsheet. Please add if you want a permanent spot in a team every week or whether you are happy to be a reserve.
Saturday junior tennis
We’d love to keep our Saturday morning sessions running throughout the year, but we haven’t had a huge amount of interest for these sessions to keep them going over autumn and winter. We’ll pause for Easter and run one last sessions on Saturday 6 April from 11.30am – 12.30pm. If we have a huge swell of interest, we reassess!
