Launching Term 4 2025: Whitehouse Tennis Academy - Whangārei
We’re excited to welcome Whitehouse Tennis Academy to Thomas Neale Family Memorial Park starting Term 4, 2025. Led by former Wimbledon junior champion Wesley Whitehouse, the academy offers high-quality coaching for juniors and adults of all levels.
Programmes available:
- Rusty Racquets: A fun, relaxed class designed for beginners and those returning to tennis after a break. Whether you’re picking up a racquet for the first time or haven’t played in years, this session focuses on the basics — grips, strokes, rallying, and movement — all at a comfortable pace. The emphasis is on building confidence, improving fitness, and enjoying the game in a supportive, social environment.
- Skills and Drills: A focused training session designed for players who want to sharpen their technique and consistency through structured drills. The class emphasises repetition, footwork, and stroke development, helping players groove their shots and improve overall court confidence. Perfect for those looking to fine-tune their game and build strong fundamentals before taking it into match play.
- Teen Intermediate Tennis: A fun, challenging program where teens develop their technique, fitness, and match play skills. Sessions focus on improving strokes, movement, and tactical awareness while building confidence and enjoyment of the game.
- Junior Hotshots Red - Beginner: Players are just starting out. They are learning the basics of rallying, sending and receiving the ball, correct grips, and fundamental movement patterns. The focus is on fun, developing hand-eye coordination, and building confidence on court.
- Junior Hotshots Red - Intermediate: Players can rally short distances with some control and consistency. They are starting to serve, rally, and score in a modified format. Emphasis is on improving technique, footwork, and introducing tactical awareness while keeping the game enjoyable.
- Junior Hotshots Red - Advanced: Players demonstrate strong control, directional hitting, and the ability to construct points. They can rally with consistency, serve with variety, and play competitive points using correct grips and strokes. The focus is on preparing them for transition to orange ball with higher intensity and competitive match play.
- Junior Hotshots Orange - Beginner: Players are developing confidence rallying on a larger court with a lower compression ball. Focus is on correct grips, sending and receiving skills, and understanding the basics of serving and returning.
- Junior Hotshots Orange - Intermediate: Players can rally with consistency from the baseline and are learning to use both forehand and backhand with greater control. They can serve overarm and begin to play simple matches with scoring. Tactical awareness (e.g., hitting to space, recovery steps) is introduced.
- Junior Hotshots Orange - Advanced: Players show reliable control and power, can rally with depth, and use a variety of serves. They are able to construct points with intention and compete confidently in match play. Focus is on preparing for the move to full-court green ball play.
- Junior Hotshots Green - Beginner: Players are transitioning to a full-sized court, using a slightly softer ball. They are developing confidence in rallying from the baseline, serving consistently, and learning to maintain a rally with proper grips and technique.
- Junior Hotshots Green - Intermediate: Players can rally full court with improved consistency and placement. They are developing stronger serves, directional hitting, and using topspin. Tactical concepts (attacking short balls, recovering to position) are becoming part of their game.
- Junior Hotshots Green - Advanced: Players demonstrate control, power, and variety in all strokes. They can serve with accuracy and spin, construct points tactically, and compete at a high standard in full-court play. They are preparing to transition into yellow ball tennis and competitive junior tournaments.
