NORTHLAND MASTERS TENNIS NEWS – March 2026
Plenty of great days around for tennis lately and it is pleasing to see many of our Masters members still doing well in the various tournaments around Northland.
Congratulations to all those who took part in these tournaments. Our members were to the fore in the Janet Agnew Doubles Carnival. Greg Miller and son Chris won the Men’s B grade while Paul Ramsay and Dave Lobb were third. Raewyn Heywood and her partner won the Women’s A grade while Raewyns’ daughter Shelley and granddaughter Tayla won the Women’s B grade. Down at Waipu, Mike (Bones) Walters took out the A grade Men’s event with his partner from Karl and Lance Hick. Raewyn Heywood and Maryanne Rogers won the Women’s event. Greg Miller and Cheryl Baker took out the Salmon Memorial played at Springfield recently.
Well done to Mike Clapshaw who attended the individual Masters Event in Christchurch and came home with Gold MS 55+, Gold MD 55+ and Bronze MXD 40+.
Coming up is the TNZM teams event in North Harbour at Easter. We have 5 teams representing us: W 60+, Debbie, Coral, Carol, Kathy, Dawn, W65+ Raewyn, Maryanne, Margaret, Rose, Mary M45+ Mike, Keith, Terry, Bones, Nick, Wes. M60+ Greg, Marc, Grant, John M70+ Paul, Dave, Glen, Roddy, Alyn, Barry
All the best for that competition and let’s hope for good tennis weather.
Not far away will be the Masters winter season. I’m sure selector Keith would like to have lots of you joining our club so it is easy for him to pick teams for matches against our northern neighbours. You need to be a member to play and its only $25 to belong! It was due on November 1st but Dave will happily receive your sub anytime. There will be tournaments here (Charlie Tana Handicap Combines and Northland Masters) later in the season so make sure you pencil in those dates once they become available.
In 2027 the Easter teams event will be held in Northland based at Thomas Neale. This will be a big event and we are pleased all our Northland Clubs are on board as we will need your help. It would be great to see more people join our Masters club and take part in this event. For those members who join for the 2027 season by the due date we are offering a free Northland Masters shirt.
My thanks to: Dave Lobb, Greg Miller, Debbie Turner, Dianne Foster, Frances Coutts, Cheryl Baker, Brittany White, Margaret Harper and Raewyn Heywood for joining me on the organising subcommittee. We have most things well in hand. Kamo Club will be the venue for the prize giving dinner and dance. The Meet and Greet evening will be held at the Kamo Club too. Volunteers, particularly those not playing, will be needed for this weekend so have a think about you might be able to give us some time to help the event run smoothly.
We hope that you will consider joining this club and play with people of a like mind and at a competitive level. Contact Dave Lobb or Moira Newton to become a member.
Yours in tennis
Paul
