Good thing we won the Timperley Cup back as rain has played a major part in our season with the Auckland game canned along with the one against Lower North. All in all, we managed to play one game against our neighbouring provinces. Next year we will try for earlier times and perhaps have a reserve day for matches. The match against South Auckland did not eventuate either as they couldn’t find a team.
Northland Masters Tournament was supported by 20 combinations including 2 from Auckland. The day was fine and still with some strong tennis played resulting in many close matches. Special thanks to Cheryl for taking entries, sorting the draw and running the day. Thanks to Margaret Ramsay for organising the lunch and serving it to hungry people.
Results on the day:
Men’s A grade winners- Terry Mitchell and Keith Cocking. RU – Kerry Friend and Jonathon Yates
Plate: Kkrish Shekaran and Tom West (Auckland)
Women’s winners – Cheryl Baker and Jo Poole. RU – Margaret Harper and Rose Lobb
Plate: Margaret Patterson and Alex Campbell
Men’s B winners – Marc Kaemper and Phillip Tana. RU Rod Langton and Dave Paul
Plate: Chris and Greg Miller
This tournament brings our season to an end as far as playing is concerned. Our next event will be the AGM that will be held in November some time. Watch this space for a date. Come along and be involved in your club.
I have repeated the information below as the NZ Masters Teams Event is a major event for Northland Tennis and we would like as many of you as possible to be part of the tournament. It is not about winning but being part of such an event and meeting people who love tennis from all over NZ.
Don’t leave things to the last minute or you will miss out. Start sorting your entry now.
In 2027 the NZ Masters Easter teams event will be held in Northland based at Thomas Neale over Easter 2027. Here’s a checklist for those considering entering:
- Find a group of likeminded people keen to play in a three-day tournament. Sort a team captain as all event information will go to them. You need to be of a similar age band as you have to play in the youngest players group. You can have a player or two from another Masters Club in your team if necessary.
- Join Northland Masters by November 30 and get a free tennis shirt.
- Send your entry to our secretary Moira by the end of January. (Actual date not yet available) She will send it to NZ.
- Practice!!
- Near Easter your captain will receive playing information and social events
- Make sure you get your social event activities sorted early as there are limited tickets to these.
Our organising committee for the NZM teams event have organised a mix and mingle on Friday night plus a prize giving dinner on the Sunday Night of Easter 2027. These are ticketed events and an added cost but are generally a great night out in dress up to celebrate another tournament. Both events are at the Kamo Club and limited to 250 people so be in early as we expect around 300 players at the Easter teams event.
Yours in tennis
Paul
