Covid Policy

Update - 9 Nov 2021

While the  move to Level 3 - Step 2  is a step in the right direction, Tennis NZ and Tennis Northern have advised the rules for tennis to occur safely under this new level and following SportNZ consulting with Government they have made the decision that Junior and Senior Interclub cannot proceed under this level due to the lack of access to toilets and heightened risk of contact through the sharing of balls. Tennis Northern remains hopeful that there could be some further easing of restrictions that remove these limitations giving us the chance to get some competition played before Christmas.

In addition to this the Committee has met to consider the possibility of a restart to Club Days. Despite the increase in gathering sizes, the requirements to ensure 2m distancing, keeping toilets and clubrooms closed (meaning no lights) and the need for strict contact tracing has led us to decide that Club Days at BTC cannot be run safely within the rules so unfortunately these wont be restarted yet.

As everyone is aware the guidelines and decisions are an ever-changing challenge. We will keep you updated as things develop further.

Hoping for some further easing of restrictions soon

Stay Safe

Background on where our Covid-19 Policy comes from?

Following changes to the national covid guidelines, Sport New Zealand meets with the Covid-19 Group at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (the government department responsible Covid-19 communication and public engagement) to interpret the updates for national sports organisations.  Sport New Zealand then provides all it’s national sport organisations (NSOs) with general sport-related information which is also posted on its website and linked to on the official government covid website.  All national organisations then produce advice tailored to their sport, for us this information comes from Tennis New Zealand.  NSOs often have to go back to Sport NZ and through them to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to check details.  Birkenhead Tennis Club’s committee then meets to discuss the advice from Tennis New Zealand, looks at the practicalities of implementing it, and often adds additional specifications to further mitigate risk.

A couple of key points

  • Under level 3.1 and 3.2 tennis coaching is considered an “outdoor exercise class” which is allowed numbers of up to 10 (under 3.1) or 25 (under 3.2) participants (including the coach) from separate bubbles to take place in each separate space as long as 2m distancing can be maintained.  Birkenhead Tennis Club has reduced this limit as we do not feel that this many people can physically distance on a single court.
  • A separate space is an area where one group can be kept completely separate from another.  Birkenhead Tennis Club has three self-contained courts allowing each court to be its own self-contained space.
  • Where we do not feel that limits can be adhered to with sufficent distancing we have reduced these. These limits include reducing the overall club attendance limits under level 3.2 to 21 as well as coaching class numbers under level 3.1 and 3.2 from 10 or 25 to 7.
  • A number of additional rules including no spectators or play on other courts during coaching at level 3.1 and 3.2 have been added to make 2m distancing possible.
