The Midweek section held its 2024 RoseBowl Tournament on Tuesday 12 March. It had been postponed from its scheduled date of 5 March as that date crept up on everyone without the commitee having called for entries in good time. However the week's delay brought a fine sunny day with very little wind so there could be no wind excuses.
Seven pairs competed in the tournament, each having been assigned a scratch or negative handicap to apply in each match. The initial objective in this tournament is to win each of three matches of first to 31, using table tennis scoring.
After three matches had been played by every team, only one pair, Kevin Wislon and Miett Fear, despite a swingeing negative handicap that made for very long matches, had three wins, so won the RoseBowl trophy outright.
The Murgatroyd Plate is contested for by those pairs who won two out of their three initial matches. Two pairs, Royston Skucek with Paula Baynes and Tim Brosnahan with Denise Meuli had two wins, so played off for the Murgatroyd Plate. The resulting match was close throughout and, in the end, was won by the tightest margin of 31-30 by Tim and Denise.
All paricipants enjoyed the pleasant conditions, which contributed to the success of the tournament.
Thanks are due to the Tournament Controller, Julie Kyle, and the Midweek committtee sub-committee of Julie, Pip Groom and Sharon Cottrell for making the pair draws and assigning the handicaps.
