Juniors

General Information

Juniors are club members aged from 10 up to 18 years as at 1 September of any year; once they turn 19 before that date, they become senior club members.

Little Aces are club members aged below 10 years as at 1 September of any year.

Karori United is one of the largest community clubs in Wellington and this is reflected in the number of our junior interclub teams (see below).

Our Junior Programme is run by our Junior Convenor Adam Pryor and a keen group of parent volunteers who manage the junior teams and transport them on match days.   As such, we are fortunate to be able to cater for a range of ages and abilities.

The club’s membership year runs from 1 September until 31 August each year.  Please visit  the Membership tab on to register for the first time or renew your membership.

Junior Club Nights

The club runs a club night for junior members from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Friday evenings over terms 4 and 1 of the school year.    Coaches are present to organise groups on the courts.

In addition, juniors who play in senior interclub teams, regional boys or girls interclub teams or who are listed on the club's senior ranking list are welcome to join senior members on senior club nights on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Junior Interclub

The Junior Interclub competitions organised by Tennis Central run for boys and girls over the summer Pre-Christmas and Post-Christmas (term 4 and term 1 of the school year) with a break in-between for school holidays.

This is a great way for players to put their coaching into practice with teammates. Teams are graded based on ability from novice to Regional teams.  Once players start interclub they receive a player code and a ranking that will be updated after each game is recorded.

Match days vary depending on the grade as follows:

Regional Elite (boys with Match Hub ranking >900 and girls >700) (Friday evenings from 4.30pm at Wellington Renouf Tennis Centre)

Regional Boys/Girls (Saturday mornings)

A grade (Sunday morning)

B grade (Sunday morning)

C grade (Sunday morning)

D grade (Sunday morning)

Novice/Hot Shots (Girls Saturday morning/ Boys Sunday morning)

Novice teams cater to children up to 12 years of age, who are playing interclub for the first time. They use the green dot softer ball and can bounce the ball for the second serve.

As one of the largest clubs in Wellington we are able to cater for all ages and abilities. While we aim to set our teams at the beginning of the season for both the Pre- and Post-Christmas competitions, we try to accommodate all requests and may also be in a position to include new teams Post-Christmas.

The club will usually enter teams in all grades, and may be able to enter more than one team in some grades. Teams aim to have 5-6 players and a parent Team Manager to organise the team roster, playing order, balls, scoresheets and entering scores.

All interclub players (or reserves) must be registered as full members.

Matches are played at various clubs in the Wellington City area.

All players are required to wear appropriate tennis attire and club shirts are available to order for all teams.

Players and parents are representatives of the club and full guidelines and rules are available here.

Note that juniors and Little Aces playing in an interclub team are charged an interclub fee toward the costs of the club of team entry fees and the balls issued for the matches.    There are separate fees for junior and senior interclub teams.

If your junior or Litle Ace is interested in playing in one of our teams, please email our Junior Interclub Convenor, Adam Pryor.

We need to hear from you by 10th September 2023 at the very latest.    However, if you have missed the deadline for Pre-Christmas, but your child would like to play Post-Christmas, please contact Adam by 1 December.

If your child would like to be a reserve in either competition, please let us know at any time and we’ll do our best to place you in a team.

Coaching

Private, semi-private, group and squad coaching sessions are available at the club courts, primarily after school on weekdays on school terms and occasionally at  weekends if courts are available.   In addition, there may be holiday programmes on weekdays during school holidays.    Contact Darren at Cyperus Coaching.

Junior Club Championships

The club holds Junior Club Championships, which in recent years have been held over a weekend toward the end of January or early February.  There are many events, both singles and doubles, based on age.   All juniors are encouraged to enter.   The standard of finals matches and sportsmanship throughout is high.

Parent and Child Tournament

The club runs a Parent and Child Tournament on Waitangi Day of each year, weather permitting, with grades of Beginner, Intermediate and Open.    Juniors are encouraged to enter with a parent or close older relative and enjoy the fun of some non-serious competition.
