2023 Combined Junior Tournament

Following a now established tradition, Karori United, Karori Lawn and Talavera Tennis Clubs organised a  further combined pre-season tournament among the juniors of three clubs.   The intent of the tournament is to provide warm-up events prior to the commencement of the junior interclub competitions that start in early October, plus providing fun for the participants.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held on Sunday 24 September but was postponed by bad weather to Sunday 1 October.

Entries were fewer this year so events were confined to Gold and Silver Singles (main  and consolation draws) and Gold and Silver Doubles (main draws only).   Gold singles matches were played at Talavera while Silver singles were  played at Karori United and Karori Lawn.    In the afternoon, Gold Doubles matches were played at Karori United while Silver Doubles matches were played at Talavera with the final being played at Karori United.

The format used for all matches was best of three sets, being two short sets plus a tie-break set if required.    This moved the matches along at a pace that permitted all matches to be completed in the one day.     However, consideration wil be given to extending the duration of future tournaments to a day and half to allow more time against the possibility of more entries.

The three clubs wish to thank the Leard family for their generous donations of prizes, including sports shop vouchers, for the various events, which were much appreciated.   Other prizes were sourced from Love Tennis leftovers and other donations.

Thanks are due also to Mark Storey, who kindly set up the tournament on Tournament Planner and  did the initial match draws for the four events, and the Tournament Director, Megan Healy, who  did subsequent redraws with the help of Flo Perret of TCR, necessitated by changes in entries possible with the postponement in the date.   Megan also  entered the results and controlled all the matches at Karori United on the day.

Thanks also to Miett Fear, who, among other things, allocated the prizes to the winners and runners-up, Kate Aldworth, who controlled the matches at Karori Lawn , Nick White, who did the same at Talavera, and Mette Kieler who took over from Nick in the afternoon.

Karori United operated its BBQ to provide hot dogs to the players at that site.
