SEPTEMBER 2024

Hello members

September kicked off spectacularly when we hosted "Love Tennis" at our courts on 8 September.  We were absolutely swamped with interest, from beginners to adults who hadn't dusted off their racquets for quite some time.  We surmised that the exemplary play of Lulu Sun (reaching the quarter finals at Wimbledon and making the final at the WTA Monterey Open in Mexico recently) had something to do with it.

September is also when all subs are renewed.  Timely payments ensure that our club operations keep running smoothly.  This is also a good time to remind members that the club is run by volunteers! with the help of a paid groundsman over the summer months.  You will have received an invoice in your "in box".
Please contact Larissa (members@tkhptennis.nz) should you have missed it.

We anticipate opening the lawn courts in October - keep an eye out for when this happens.

Our astro courts 7 and 8 on row 2 will be replaced also in October.   This may cause a small amount of disturbance, hopefully it will be kept to a minimum.

Planning for our 50th Anniversary Lawn Tournament (January 2025) is well underway.  Should you not be entering yourself that weekend (and we encourage you to enter), please let us know if you can help out in any other way, either before or during the event.  If you have hospitality contacts we could utilise, please let us know.

Introducing our Patron:  Lindsay North

Lindsay joined the United Tennis Club in 1973 after marrying Jan, a club member.  In 1978, after the club's pavilion burned down, Lindsay chaired the fundraising committee for several years to build a new pavilion and also helped secure permits for its construction. In 1982, Lindsay became president after Brian Steadman, who had served for 25 years, and stayed in that role for three years. Lindsay remained on the committee afterward, serving as secretary and assistant treasurer at various times, before stepping down a few years ago.

Beyond the club, Lindsay was involved with Wilding Park Foundation from about 2009 for 10 years, playing a key role in its redevelopment post-earthquake. Lindsay also contributed to the development of the Nga Puni Wai facility. Recognised for his contributions, Lindsay is a life member of Wilding Park, Tennis Canterbury, and TKHP.

Lindsay’s children, Andrew and Michelle, also played tennis at the club, with Michelle still actively playing. Although still playing tennis, golf has become a new passion. Lindsay is also deeply involved in rugby as a life member and treasurer of the University of Canterbury Rugby Club supporters club.

Professionally, Lindsay practiced law for over 50 years and is now mostly retired.
