While Cyperus Tennis + Fitness largely works with young people and adults wanting to play socially or to compete in local interclub, we are also able to offer a performance programme for those wanting to progress further with their tennis.
Darren & Lorrae have been through the performance journey with Caitlin, both as parents and as her coach. The journey with Caitlin began when she was 4 years old. It progressed to competing and training in much older age groups, chasing National Titles, NZ team selection, competing throughout NZ / Australia / Europe, chasing international rankings, injury and illness set backs, psychological pressures, Div 1 US scholarships and post College opportunities.
It doesn't matter the age of the player, talk to us about their goals. It is never too soon. We will share our learnings with you, as well as providing the technical expertise required to coach young athletes. Darren's experience in the Fitness industry as a Personal Trainer is invaluable to young players managing the heavy workload necessary to succeed in tennis. It is not easy but can be very worthwhile.
We can help map your child's journey based on their needs and committment. We offer individual club based programs for players of any age, willing to seriously commit to developing their tennis to a high level, through a mix of private and group sessions. If the best option is to be involved in another programme, we will work through those options with you and offer guidance. We will always stay involved in their development, if that is what you, and they, want.
What does a "typical" peformance programme look like?
While every player is different, the core components to developing a higher level of performance are:
One - hitting lots of balls.
Two - technical skill development.
Three - matchplay.
Four - physical conditioning.
Five - mental skills training.
These components need to be managed to ensure productive training relative to age. Technical skills are developed through private sessions where individual needs can be identified and met. Sound technical strokes, developed early, are less likely to break down or be exposed when playing at a higher level. Competing in matches is crucial to development, both learning to win and handling the losses. Initially, competing locally is sufficient, but that needs to progress to competing around the country and eventually internationally. Darren will always be available to support your child in many of those competitions and in planning their calendar.
